Update on Municipal Buillding Projects in Warrenton

The people of Warrenton, Oregon, plan ahead. They have to. In the case of two municipal building projects currently underway, both started in the planning stages years ago. One is just finishing up, the other is just now going out to bid.

The building that is almost ready for phased-in occupancy is the new municipal building, intended to house the fire and police departments, as well as city hall, for more than the next thirty years. The stated goal of the project was to set a future development theme for downtown Warrenton by providing attractive and functional public facilities. The $1.5 million general obligation bond monies are "in the bank," according to city manager Gil Gramson, and departments will start moving in October 15

The cornerstone of the structure was just dedicated on August 19. The architect for the project was Peck Smiley Ettlin out of Portland and the general was Taggart Construction. The design of the building was based on a report made to the City of Warrenton by the Warrenton Municipal Building Assessment Committee in October, 1994. Leslie Shepherd was the chair of the committee and members included Floyd Crouch, Jeff Doughty, Gillian Maggert, Leslie Newton, James Rankin and Dick Walter. Individual municipal departments provided the committee with the amount of space they would require to perform their duties and the commission felt the fire and police chiefs should be actively involved in the planning process. The finished product encompasses almost 17,000 square feet. It can accommodate the departments mentioned above as well as fire department vehicles and public meeting space, among others.

The second project in the hopper for municipal usage in Warrenton is the public works facility. While it is scaled down from the original plans and the hopes of public works superintendent David Haskell, it is going out for bid on October 15. The plan is to fund the $187,000, 3,192 square foot building out of the fees generated by the public works department (sewer and garbage fees, etc.) and have the building ready for occupancy by 120 days from beginning construction.
