Janet
Francis (above) said, "Flowers have always been my thing."
When she first moved to the area she began to look for work in
her professional field, however, which had been human resource
management. "I told my husband, David, that I felt like I
was fighting the mailbox though, not wanting to drop in my resume."
When she switched gears and contemplated taking a job in an area
flower shop, he suggested she open her own, instead.
Janet and her family are originally from the area, but she moved
to Vermont for 15 years. During the day she worked at a power
plant in human resources, and has also worked with payroll, accounting
and other office functions. Since her family was still in the
area, she and David, a "born and bred New England boy,"decided
to return. On the way to Bend, Oregon, for possible relocation,
they got a call from Janet's sister, Cheryl Zoller. Cheryl and
her husband had just purchased a mini-storage business in Cathlamet
and they needed someone to manage it: David was just the man.
On the same property as the mini-storage business were some empty
office spaces, now home to Heaven Scent Flowers and Gifts. Janet
opened September 1 in approximately 1,000 square feet. She specializes
in weddings, offering cakes and invitations, amenities like cake
cutters and ring bearer pillows, as well as, veils, and a gift-line
of candles. Other items include tin-works gifts with a country
flavor, and of course, Heaven Scent sells fresh and silk flower
arrangements, wreath swags and topiaries, and is a member of Telaflora.
Janet will deliver free of charge to anyone in the Cathlamet area
and offers the bonus treat of coffee and cookies to her customers.
