October, 1999 newsletter, the Pacific Marine Conservation Council
has developed a community descriptions booklet which is available
in draft form. It is listed as Supplemental Attachment G.5 a of
September 1999.
This 100+ page booklet lists, by county, the income from landed
catches. Going back more than 10 years, it contains information
on fleet sizes, all species landings, number of processors and
more.

Wood Products Association, "America's appetite for lumber
products continues to grow, with lumber demand in 1999 expected
to reach an all-time high for the second consecutive year. Demand
is forecast to decline modestly in 2000, but remain at historically
high volumes.
WWPA, in its semiannual forecast of lumber supply and demand,
estimates the U.S. lumber demand will total a record 53.3 billion
board feet in 1999, an increase of 2.2 percent from 1998."
"Looking to next year, WWPA is forecasting lumber demand
to slip by 2 percent to 52.3 billion board feet. While lower,
the demand volume in 2000 would be the second highest in history."
>For those of us following the continuing New Carissa saga, the U.S. Coast Guard has issued a revised manual. The handling of hazardous materials emergencies during waterborne transportation is the focus of the Chemical Hazards Response Information System (Called CHRIS) Manual. The manual contains chemical, physical, and toxicological property data for more than 1,300 chemicals plus response, shipping and regulatory information. The manual is available from the U.S. Government Printing Office for $90. > According to the October, 1999 issue of Printing Impressions magazine, "Paper prices appear steady now, but...Most printers have not experienced any significant changes in paper markets over the past quarter. However, as Asian and Latin American economies recover strength, there is a concern about tighter paper markets over the next year, so this is a consumable category on which to keep close tabs."
> Tuesday, November 9 there will be a meeting regarding Salmon Recovery at 7pm in the Kern Room of the Columbia River Maritime Museum, 1792 Marine Drive in Astoria.
