Video Biz "Espressed" Over to New Owners
Not yet ready to retire? Buy a business -- that's what Craig & Susan have done

In the July, 1996 issue of Lower Columbia BUSINESS we covered the transition to new ownership of what had then been the franchise location of Movietime Video. New owners Dave and Lynn Zelinski did not purchase the franchise portion of the business, so it was renamed Video Espress. The new name highlighted both the movie rental and the espresso aspects of their new venture.
Dave and Lynn have recently sold that Seaside business to relative newcomers Susan and Craig Beeman.
Susan and Craig are both originally from Colorado, but they followed their daughter and her family here to the coast. Daughter Kelli Irwin learned of our cozy corner of the world from her youth pastor at age 15. After Kelli and her husband, James, moved here and started a family, the grandparents were surely not far behind.
Susan has worked in the office end of the medical profession for over 25 years. Craig, on the other hand, was a barber for 28 years. Once they came to the coast two years ago, however, they didn't buckle down to work right away. "We took a break," said Susan, "but quickly figured out we were too young yet to retire." Hence the new venture.
They took over ownership of Video Espress on Holladay Drive on February 16, 2000. The 1,200 square foot retail store packs a whopping 4,700 titles with more coming in every day.
While they clearly will be adding their own touches to the operations, some things will remain the same. First, they have kept the "picks" portion of the business that is a carryover as far back as the Movietime days. There are sections for "Susan's picks," "Craig's picks" and the "Kid's picks," but bear in mind that the "kids" in this case are teenagers and older. In addition, they still have the $3 for 3 movies for 3 days, $5 for 5 movies for 5 days offer for non-new-release movies and they offer an assortment of candies and espresso drinks to compliment your video rental experience.
New release prices are set at 1 for $3 for 1 day, 2 for $5 for 1 day, 3 for $7 for 2 days, 4 for $9 for 2 days and so on with many combinations. And, with the rental of any new release, you may select a free kid's movie rental. According to Susan they have a lot of folks coming in once a week from Jewell who take advantage of their seven-day pricing and stock up. LCB
