Local floorcovering company branches out, but not too far, not too fast

Morris was born in Seaside, and his children were, too. He has
been installing carpeting since he was 18 years old and started
his own installation business by age 20. He took all the way until
age 29 to start retailing carpet, and the next big move came in
1995 when he built his own building/warehouse/showroom of over
11,000 square feet on Highway 101 in Seaside. This guy takes his
time in making changes.
He works with his sales and installation people the same long-term
way. Some of his sales people have worked with him up to five
years: They are Michelle Taylor, Monique Smith, Judhi Chopping
and Tom Majors. Tenure on his installers ranges up to 8 years:
Gene Linn, John Asle Morris & Ben Morris (yes, John's sons),
Ryan Lee and Tracey Gassner.
As of last May, he got a call from the franchise people of Abbey
Carpet Company, Inc. and just last month refurbished his showroom
to take on their affiliation.
According to company literature, Abbey Carpet began in Sacramento,
California in 1958. They now have over 900 franchise locations
and have set a cap on the process of 1,100 stores. Affiliation
with a major carpet franchise does not limit your brands or selection,
but rather opens more opportunity doors for "economies of
scale" buying power, advertising support and training opportunities,
said Morris.
While the Morris showroom has taken on a colorful new look, the
inventory inside has not changed much. "We were already pretty
clued into the good stuff, anyway," said John. Morris Floorcovering
stocks major mills like Shaw and Mohawk, Gulistan, Tuftex, Royalty,
Miliken, United Beaulieu of America and more...or "Any carpet
you want," continues Morris. "Bring in a sample and
we can get it."
The same goes for ceramic tile, vinyl flooring, wood laminate
flooring, countertops, marble and other materials. They have thousands
of samples on premise plus as many as 30 rolls of carpet and 300
remnant rolls...all ready to shove into the back of your truck
to take home with you...or to be scheduled for installation. Once
installed, the Morris Floorcovering cleaning crew can keep it
