Economic
development is of great concern to many local residents. Issues
which have been of concern to the regional community, on both
sides of the Columbia River, include the development of tourism,
the construction and operation of a convention or conference center,
the appropriate use of North Tongue Point, Columbia River Channel
Deepening, and the development of the ports of Astoria and Ilwaco.
Starting March 27th, Clatsop Community College will offer a course
in which local residents could address these issues titled "Current
Economic Issues & Policies." The class will meet on Thursday
evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M., and be broken up into smaller
student work groups. Each group will select a local or regional
economic topic to study; do the necessary research using library
resources, internet resources, interviews; and such other techniques
as they feel appropriate and helpful. At the completion of the
academic quarter (first week of June) each group will present
reports which should be of interest to public agencies, organizations,
etc. I am hoping we will have a good mix of participants -- including
both traditional students, concerned citizens and business persons
whom we don't normally see in our college classrooms.
The format of the class sessions will be that of a seminar rather
than a lecture format. Time will be used for coordination within
and between groups, for evaluation of research and reporting progress,
discussion of additional resources required and how they may be
obtained. n
