Cannie Mae? Yes, this is NOT a typo.
According to the February 15-21 issue of BC's Business in Vancouver, "A Vancouver firm is trying to churn a buck from the socially responsible investing trend by helping to house society's less fortunate." Fannie-Mae is a U.S.-based vehicle created by the federal government in 1938 to replenish the supply of lendable mortgage money by purchasing FHA insured mortgages. (See www.fanniemae. com/company/history.html for more information.) The Canadian "Cannie Mae" people, with a firm called Acre Fund, hope to aid non-profit groups and others in building affordable and senior housing while at the same time making money for shareholders by pooling and selling the resulting mortgages to retail and institutional investors. The Cannie Maes are expected to "carry a risk premium compared with Canadian-government insured mortgage-backed securities now available," and yet the firm still needs to find an investment product reseller and an investment firm to complete an online $12-million initial public offering to raise core capital.
