Seaside's Marty Phillips
has been responsible for the birth of both Debbie Stirling, and
Debbie's new business. Debbie is Marty's daughter, who has now
opened her own employment firm in Seaside, called Pacific Personnel.
Marty Phillips began Temps Unlimited in 1993. Since then both
her son, Kris Johnston (see LCB January, 1997) and now her daughter
have joined the industry. Debbie returned to the U.S. a year ago
after 13 years of married life in New Zealand. Debbie's husband,
Derek Stirling is originally from New Zealand. He has visited
the U. S. off and on, but this is his first permanent relocation.
" We saw an opportunity for our family to live the culture,"
said Derek, " while our children were still young."
Stirling has been a sales manager for Canon for six years prior
to coming stateside. Debbie, on the other hand, spent her working
career in human resources, working in New Zealand in the leisure
industry for the last ten years. She has worked the past year
with her mother at Temps Unlimited.
Pacific Personnel officially began operation December 22, 1999
at Highway 101 and 3rd Avenue in Seaside. Derek handles payroll,
signs up new clients, and has the job of keeping existing clients
happy. Debbie, on the other hand, plans to "work more on
the business than in the business." Other Pacific Personnel
staffers are safety officer/office manager Shirley Cordova and
placement specialist, Stephanie Tescher. Both Cordova and Tescher
came from Temps Unlimited, which has since been "retired"
by Phillips.
Other Temps connections in the new business include the roster
of workers/worker pool, the phone and fax numbers and, hopefully,
the client list. "We are making the transition as unconfusing
as possible for our potential clients," said Debbie. "We
will be calling on each Temps Unlimited client to explain our
new services and scope."
Part of the reason for the name change to Pacific Personnel is
that expanded scope. The name Temps Unlimited implied that the
services may focus on only temporary workers. Pacific Personnel
on the other hand, will serve employers on a number of levels:
temporary workers, temp-to-hire, employee leasing and employee
screening/recruitment services. They will also offer employee
training and safety information.
Thanks to Temps Unlimited, Pacific Personnel can cull from as
many as 2,500 workers, planning to put 100 to 140 workers on the
street during the summer months, 80 to 100 in winter. Temporary
worker skills are almost limitless: from a handy-man who might
spend three hours weeding the garden of your summer home to a
construction worker for a month's employment on a site, a legal
secretary to get you through the next big case, or, for example,
Pacific will recruit a car salesman to join your dealership full
time.
They can work with employers needing a single worker up to those
that employ hundreds full time. "Our target, though,"
said Derek, "are those mom and pop operations that are so
essential to the coast. We want to develop a partnership with
them: We want to see their businesses grow. " LCB
