Floral shop passes anniversary, focuses on new horizons

Corinne Barclay takes things in steps. She began arranging dried flowers out of her home, then she began showing her work at bazaars. She opened her St. Helens flower shop, called Barclay's Flora on October 21, 1998. A little later she added a website for viewing some of her floral creations and more recently added a digital camera to help her clients envision how her work will look. Now, with years of experience to show, she is expanding her services to encompass larger plant sales for office/showroom environments, and she is looking for larger space.
Corinne has lived in the area for eight years, following a ten-year stint in Portland where she worked for P&G Plant Company, a large plant maintenance firm. She was born in Roseburg, Oregon and "migrated north, but not too far," she said. Her husband, Brent Barclay, works at the Columbia River Public Utility District, but is supportive of shop activities as time permits.
Corinne will provide fresh, dried, or silk flower arrangements or small gifts, such as candles, soaps or bubble bath, for weddings, funerals, or other occasions from her current location in the heart of old town St. Helens. Even if she moves to larger quarters, she hopes to keep her old town district location, but ultimately wants to be more of an "On-line flower shop for guys who are too embarrassed to come in. They can get on our Website and order right through the computer," she said.
The least expensive items in the shop are for do-it-yourself flower arrangers and component parts start at $3.50. Large customs wreaths may run as high as $200.00, but most average no more than $150.00.
Corinne likes her custom flower work and prefers to operate more like a decorator, with clients bringing in color schemes or desired styles and letting her perform her magic. "I enjoy the large Martha Stewart, garden-type weddings that are so popular now," and she keeps her eye on other area floral shops so that she is not selling competing merchandise. "I don't want to compete with the walk-in, FTD type florist. My work is more custom-designed, and yet I try to provide quality things at competitive prices." She will come to your home or office to advise you on your plant or floral needs for a fee of $25.00 per hour, with a one hour minimum. LCB
