Updates have been received from Columbia Memorial Hospital, Ocean Beach Hospital, Seaside Providence, and Tillamook County General Hospital.
Columbia Memorial Hospital
With the dust just settling from their last $1.4 million expansion
project, they have turned to remodeling of a different sort. The
hospital has recently revamped both its logo and tagline to present
a more current image of its mission. The new tag line reads, "Serving
People, Touching lives," and may be seen accompanying their
new logo in their ad on page 13. Other new offerings at Columbia
Memorial Hospital included new pharmacy manager, Mike Mockler,
transferring in from a position of director of the pharmacy at
Harney District Hospital in Eastern Oregon. Mockler's previous
experience includes serving as pharmacist for the armed forces
in both the Vietnam and Desert Storm conflicts.
Arlene Layton started with CMH on October 1 as the new marketing
coordinator and volunteer services coordinator, replacing Andrea
Larson. Arlene has 20 years marketing experience in the Portland
area, including work with the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science
and Technology and the Oregon Historical Society.
The Great Columbia Crossing, sponsored for the first year as a
fundraiser for the hospital foundation, hosted 243 runners and
netted $20,000 for the foundation. Good Show!
The next event coming up will be the first annual Northwest Golf
Championship, to be held this June at at the Astoria Golf and
Country Club. Proceeds will benefit the CMH Foundation. This year
the CHM Women's Auxiliary raised over $50,000 through fundraisers
and gift shop sales to purchase new equipment for the hospital.
Some new equipment available at CHM just since September, 1999
includes a Helical (Spiral ) CT scanner. This state-of-the-art
(Front Cover Photo) equipment provides
the best spatial resolution, a low radiation dose, low cost and
ultrafast scanning time. Quick turnaround of readings means that
exams may be performed the same day as the scan, or even the same
hour as requested. Scans of the patient are usually completed
within seconds, and yet with an ultrahigh spatial resolution for
fine scan detail. Services include kidney/ureter helical CT scans
for stones of obstruction; dynamic high resolution of lungs; helical
CT portography of the liver; Aorta evaluation for aneurysm, dissection
or ulcerations; appendicitis evaluation; CT angiography for surgical
simulation and planning; and fracture evaluation with 3D display.
"This is great equipment," said Jerry Brekke, manager
of imaging services, "now we no longer have to send our patients
away, they can stay near home and get great information."

Ocean Beach Hospital
Education and equipment are the watchwords for expansion at Ocean
Beach Hospital this year. They have just started a cardiac rehabilitation
program that follows the guidelines of the American Association
of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, under the direction
of Dr. Sood. In addition, they have begun a diabetic education
class that is held near the hospital and even on to the nearby
Native American reservations. To help people make charitable contributions
toward the hospital in its service to the community, Linda BeMiller,
with 20-plus years of foundation experience, is looking for community
volunteers to serve on her development program.
Ocean Beach recently purchased a state-of-the -art x-ray unit
which is computer-driven. The equipment enables tele-medicine,
for use of a virtual x-ray department. "We can send x-rays
anywhere in the world to access specialists," said hospital
administrator Pam Ott. "Twenty minutes later we can have
a reading back from a specialist, and that's a lot easier than
driving all the way to Seattle as some of our patients used to
have to do."
In Ocean Park, OBH has helped open Golden Sands at Klipsan Beach,
an assisted living facility. The facility offers three levels
of care ranging from basic services to more frequent support and
care for special needs in studio or one-bedroom apartments.
As OBH adds departments, equipment and staff, they find they are
landlocked where they are currently located in Ilwaco, Washington.
This summer plans are to hold a series of community meetings about
renovation or relocation of their current facilities. We will
try to keep you posted.

Providence Seaside Hospital
Of hospitals with less than 100 beds, Providence Seaside has recently
been selected as one of the top three when compared on quality,
productivity and cost. They were selected as part of the Pacific
Region category, reviewing the top 12 performing hospitals within
Alaska, Hawaii, California and Oregon. The announcement of placings
was made by HCIA, a leading health care information company (www.hcia.com).
Their newly constructed office building should be completed by
June, 2000 and pilots are commenting on their helipad, which opened
last August, providing ample lighting and easy access to the hospital.
They are opening a health and lifestyles resource center for people
looking for information regarding particular conditions about
keeping healthy. Patrons will have access to online information
and health-sites that the hospital staff consider reputable. The
center will be under the direction of David Rainey, who also edits
the hospital's Health & Lifestyle magazine.

Tillamook County General Hospital
Tillamook County Hospital is still in the throes of their extensive
remodeling and expansion project that began two years ago. The
project, begun after voter approval of a $10 million bond issue,
included the addition of 25,000 square feet to the existing building
and renovation of approximately 38,000 square feet of existing
space. Nearly all departments are being remodeled or moved to
new space. While completion of the entire project is slated for
summer of this year, you may see a special portion of it for yourself
if you drop by the TCGH surgery department that has just opened
the first week in February. The new almost 10,000 square feet
space features three operating rooms, one special procedure room
for Endoscopy, an eight-bed recovery room area - with separate
pre-op and immediate recovery areas after anesthesia, central
processing station and pre-admission RN services center. The department
is located on the first floor directly across from the out-patient
waiting area. The entire remodeling project will celebrate with
an open house in the fall, timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary
of Tillamook County General Hospital...Congratulations on serving
the community so long and so well.
In addition, the hospital has recently been awarded a $10,000
grant from the CHS Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation to
support Faith in Action. FIA is a volunteer-based coalition of
churches and health and service agencies working together to provide
respite and support care for Tillamook County residents in need.
Through a working partnership of parish nurses and interfaith
volunteers, Faith in Action has begun to meet the needs of more
than 100 individuals who are frail and elderly, homebound, disabled,
or those who suffer from chronic or mental illness, and care facility
residents suffering from sheer loneliness.
The Oregon Community Foundation manages charitable funds donated
by individuals, families and businesses to enhance and support
the quality of life in their communities. LCB
