Tuesday, February 22 Portland State University professor Darrell Millner will lecture on "York of the Corps of Discovery." When Lewis and Clark came to Oregon in 1804-06, an important member of the expedition was York, the slave of William Clark. Millner will examine the role of York on the journey as well as the 200 years of scholarship and interpretation concerning York. The FREE event, sponsored by CCC's Cultural Events and Lecture Series, will be held at the Performing Arts Center, 16th and Franklin in Astoria at 2pm. The 3rd annual Fisher Poets Gathering will be held February 24 - 26 in Astoria. Call 503/325-7972 for more information. 4-10pm Friday, Saturday at the Wet Dog Cafe, 11th and the River. There will be writing and art workshops held at the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Sat from 9a - 2p. There is a one-time $5 entry fee for participation in the event.

Miracle on Wheels makes power/electric wheelchairs available to non-ambulatory senior citizens (65 years of age and older) usually at no out-of-pocket expense, if they qualify. No deposit is required. The electric wheelchairs are provided to those who can not walk and can not self-propel a manual wheelchair in their home or independent living quarters and who meet the additional qualifications of the program. This service may also be available to the permanently disabled of any age. Clatsop Behavioral Healthcare passed a successful site audit by the Oregon Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs. The two-day audit covered issues such as adequacy and depth of assessments and treatment plans, quality of services, and staff qualifications and training. A grant of $2,500 has been made by the Washington Mutual Foundation to Clatsop Community Action. Curtis Seymour, manager of the Astoria branch of Western Bank presented the check to Frida L. Fraunfelder of Clatsop Community Action. This grant will help support the emergency food program of the agency, and will help develop a new food pantry serving east county communities of Knappa, Svensen and Westport and an outreach program to increase service to Hispanic members of the community. Wednesday, March 1 is the kickoff concert for the CCC celebration of Women's History Month, sponsored by CCC's Cultural Events and Lecture Series. The concert, held at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center, 16th and Franklin in Astoria, will include local musicians Andrea Rowe, Heather Christie and Jennifer Goodenberger performing original compositions and a discussion of opportunities for women in music.

A free Wage and Hour Seminar will be held Wednesday, March 8 in the State Office Building, 450 Marine Drive in Astoria. The seminar, with presenter Dan Grinfas, program coordinator for the Bureau of Labor and Industries, will be held from 8am until 12 noon.
