The Coast Guard is usually
known for its "snappy" appearance, but the U.S. Coast
Guard Station Tillamook Bay is looking especially good these days,
for two reasons. The station has recently undergone several major
upgrades in its facilities, and has just received a new commander.
According to Petty Officer First Class Martin Ornelas, the station
was originally commissioned in 1982, and had not received any
major overhauls since that time. Last year a "catwalk"
wall that protects the boats and boathouse sustained some damage
and the station 's boathouse and docks were also a little worse
for wear. A $1 million renovation project included expansion of
their fuel farm, replacing floating docks and gangways, and replacement
of the metal "skin" on the boathouse/covered moorage.
The
Coast Gu
ard
requirement for boats is they remain 95% fueled so they are always
ready. The new fuel farm will hold 6,000 gallons.
The replacement of the docks came in stages, pulling old pilings,
moving old concrete floating docks to a temporary location to
have a place to moor the boats while work is completed, and installating
new piling and docks. That work was completed by 2G Construction
out of Eugene, Oregon. External docks are 48 feet long and 8 feet
wide. Docks located inside the boathouse are 47 feet long.
"In a couple of weeks another company will re-side the boathouse,"
added Ornelas, "including the addition of bird-netting."
The boathouse has a footprint of 376 square feet and the new
"digs" are designed to withstand a wind load of 90 miles
per hour. The boathouse work is being completed by Bergerson Construction
of Astoria. All work is estimated for completion in June.
On March 24, 2000 a Change in Command Ceremony was held for incoming
BMCM Curtis W. Mauck. Master Chief Mauck grew up in California
, enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1976 and has held assignments
in Washington state and California. LCB
