Eight years ago Tillamook gained a new business called The Pet Peddler. Just a couple of months ago the business acquired new owners and a new address. Jeff Sayler purchased the business and one week later moved it to 209 Main Avenue after his father, Glen Sayler, purchased that building. The space had been occupied by an appliance store. “My dad buys investment properties,” said Jeff. “He has other properties around town.”
The previous owners are giving a helping hand and business advice, but Jeff and his fiance, Cherry Mallott, are putting years of pet-care experience to the test. “This is something we have both been into since we were very young,” said Cherry, who was born in McMinneville, Oregon. “Animals....fish...It has always been a hobby. We were spending money on it anyway, why not make it a business? Now we get to spend time with the animals and send them off to someone else’s house!”
Tillamook native Jeff left the area for a couple of years for college and has lived in Canada prior to returning to his roots. “This is my first retail experience,” he said, “But keeping animals is something I have wanted to do my whole life. We have fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and their supplies, plus dog and cat supplies, small animal supplies. “
Cherry said, “We keep learning new things. There are other places for pet supplies, and occasional chickens or rabbits at the feed store, but there is not even an animal shelter in town. That is something that needs to be done.”
“We have varieties of fish,” said Jeff. “Right now about 50 and we are adding in a lot of gallons of fish. We are adding about 800 gallons of fish tanks. Then we will have a lot more varieties. We plan to be all set up by the beginning of next year. We will be doing aquarium maintenance - if someone wants it - and that will be by appointment.”
Jeff said that they will probably get new fish every week once they get their tanks set up and they will have pure-bred dogs on occasion. “We will probably work with a no-kill shelter for kittens, later, and we already work with dozens of pet supply vendors to provide a wide variety.” LCB
